2 from Lake Shore CSD among state's top student musicians
Every Spring, Lake Shore music students can perform a solo and audition for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State Music Festival, competing against thousands of other music students throughout the state. This year, two Lake Shore students were selected as some of the state’s top music talent. Joshua Merritt was selected as one of New York’s top French horn players, and will perform in the All-State Symphonic Honor Band at the State Music Conference in Rochester (Eastman) in early December. Jake Hopkins was selected as an alternate trumpet player and has a chance to participate, pending the acceptance of the other All-State trumpet students.
“This is a huge accomplishment for these talented performers,” says Music Department Chair/High School Band Director Eric Blodgett, noting that several other middle and high school band, orchestra, and vocal students also auditioned. “They have an excellent chance of being accepted into the Area All-State Festival as some of the top student musicians in Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus counties.”
Josh Merritt also received another local honor – he was accepted into the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra, representing Lake Shore in Western New York’s top student orchestra!
