Frequently Asked Questions
Is the CDL training really free?
Yes. Lake Shore CSD covers the cost of CDL training—a savings of about $6,000. While the training itself is unpaid, there’s no tuition, and once licensed, you can begin driving routes and earning pay right away.
How long does the training take?
Training typically takes 3–6 weeks depending on class schedules and test dates. You’ll train with an experienced Lake Shore mentor who helps you every step of the way until you’re fully certified and route-ready.
What is the schedule like?
Routes run in the morning and afternoon during the school year, leaving mid-day hours open. Drivers have weekends, holidays, and summers off—perfect for parents, retirees, and small business owners.
How much do drivers earn?
Lake Shore offers competitive hourly pay that grows with experience and certifications. All drivers are eligible for NYS Employees Retirement System (ERS) benefits, ensuring long-term stability.
What kind of support will I get?
Every driver receives mentoring from experienced staff, ongoing safety workshops, and paid refresher sessions. You’ll always have help available from a team that values your success and safety.
Who makes a great Lake Shore driver?
Friendly, community-minded people who take pride in helping students succeed. Many of our drivers are Lake Shore alumni, parents, and retirees who enjoy making a visible impact every day.
What happens after I apply?
