• Whether you're new to playing an instrument or you're returning after summer break, this is a great time to get into some early practice routines.  If you are consistent with practicing every day, you will be amazed at how quickly you can begin to make great sounds on your instrument!

Remember!  The beginning is challenging for EVERYONE!  It is completely normal to not sound good right away.  Stick with it and you will be sounding better very soon!  Here are some helpful practice tips to get you set up in the beginning.

    1. Practice your instrument a little bit every day!  In the beginning you might not sound great and that is OK!!  The more you play your instrument each day, the less squeaks and squawks you’ll make and the better you will sound.  Try to pick a consistent practice time every day (maybe add it onto homework time) so that you get into the habit of practicing and it becomes something that you just do!

    2. Beginners should practice AT LEAST 20 minutes a day, for a minimum of five days a week.  After the first couple of months, practice time should increase to 30 minutes a day.

    3. Practice in a quiet place that is free of distractions.  Students learn best when they are able to focus their attention on their instrument and music.

    4. A sturdy chair is necessary for promoting good posture.  Many students prefer to stand when they practice when a chair with good back support is not readily available.

    5. A music stand is a MUST.  Wire music stands are inexpensive and available at all music stores.  A music stand also encourages good posture for our students.

    6. Some students use a timer to help them keep track of their practice time.

    7. The first month is the most difficult time.  If something is difficult or frustrating it is ok to walk away and come back to it later.  As long as you are trying your best, you will get better!

    8. A little bit of encouragement goes a long way!  The more interest family members show in their child practicing, the more likely they will actually practice!
