• Welcome to 8th Grade and the 2023-24 school year!  Plans are being made for this to be one of the most exciting years at William G. Houston Middle School. 

    In Social Studies, students will learn about United States History from 1865 through current events.  Topics include: The United States Constitution (Constitution Day - September 17th), Reconstruction, Big Business, Immigration, The Progressive Era, America Becomes a World Power, World War I, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, World War II, The Cold War, 1950's (Truman, Eisenhower), the Korean War, 1960's (Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon), Vietnam, 1970's (Nixon, Ford, Carter), 1980's (Reagan, George H.W. Bush), 1990's (Bush, Clinton), 2000 - Present (George W. Bush, 9-11, Terrorism, Obama, Election of 2016, Trump, Election of 2020, Biden and current events.)   
     
    Continuing this year, students will participate in a unit based on Basic Money Management which will be called Friday Economics.  This unit will provide students with content from how to read a paycheck, using a checking and savings account, electronic banking, managing your money (credit and loans), as well as other life skills pertaining to Economics.  After completing Friday Economics, students will be involved discussing Civics and creating a project that revolves around Civics.
