Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson was the inspiration for the 1st grade students. They watched the video book using the classroom projector. The students used a familiar art medium in a different way to create these wonderful autumn trees. After drawing their trees they sharpened crayons and Mrs. Wade used an iron to melt the crayon shavings.

The 1st grade students participated in the Square 1 Art fundraiser. They created these sailboat silhouettes using construction paper and crayons.
After hearing the book If you Give a Pig a Pancake the 1st grade students created their own pig. After viewing the steps they drew their pig using 3 circles. They used watercolor paint to add color and outlined with marker. An extra fun part was mixing colors to make the right shade of pink. The 1st grade students heard the story Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. They used the story as their inspiration when they drew their own fish, colored with marker and added a touch of glitter. They used different shades of blue to paint their background. The students learned the difference between a portrait and self portrait. They learned about the correct placement of their facial features. They tried to match their skin, hair, and eye color. They also practiced making patterns on their mittens.
The 1st grade students learned about polar bears through a powerpoint presentation. They used the watercolor wet on wet technique (wet paper & wet brush) to create their sky and ice. For a special effect they used salt for the sky. They put plastic wrap on the ice while it dried to create a unique effect. The students viewed the artwork of artist Stuart Davis. The students enjoyed looking for the different letters and numbers that he incorporates in his abstract paintings. The 1st graders wrote the letters of the alphabet making sure the letters connected and then they colored in the shapes with crayons to create their own abstract art.Artist Henri Matisse was the inspiration for these collages. A wet on wet watercolor technique (wet paper & wet brush) with plastic wrap helped to create the interesting effect for their fishbowls.
We read the book Snowmen All Year by Caralyn & Mark Buehner in class. After taking some time to find the hidden pictures in the book the students were ready to create their own snowman picture. They used a watercolor resist technique by drawing their scene with oil pastels and then painting over the whole image with watercolor.
