Unit Two: Sentence Structure, Root Words and Teenage Stresses!
A new quarter brings a new unit. This coming unit, students will be learning new and necessary life-skills necessary for life in and after Lake Shore High School. Every day, we learn basic grammar, vocabulary and life-skills applicable in and out of school.
Every-Day Grammar: Sentence Structures, Parts and Applications!
Student are wrapping up their unit on the parts of speech and will begin our second grammar unit learning sentence structure, types and parts (direct vs. indirect objects). These skills are not only necessary for academic communication and writing skills, but they will help students excel on the upcoming SAT/ACT exams in a couple years. Now that they know the parts of speech (nouns, adverbs, prepositions), they can create better sentences. Ask your child to sing the "Preposition Song" (it goes to the beat of Beyonce's "Single Ladies"). I would love to see their faces :)
Cross-Curricular Vocabulary: 100 Most Common Latin/Greek Root-Words!!!
Statistics show that if a student knows the root of a word, he or she will be more likely to figure out its meaning. For example, if we know bio means life, then we will be able to define words like biology, biography. Freshmen will learn the most popular root words used in American English and will be better able to relate them to terms used in core-courses. According to freshmen surveys from past years, this unit proved to be one of the most beneficial.
Life Skills: Teenage Stresses!
Now that students have finished reading Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens book, they can adapt these good habits to all parts of life--social, emotional, academic and behavioral. Well, now we are applying these habits to dealing with typical topics that can negatively affect teens today
