Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters

Lake Shore Central School District proudly observed Orange Shirt Day, a national day that honors Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools and acknowledges the lasting impacts on families and communities. The day reminds us that Every Child Matters—and that learning and understanding are key to healing and respect.
High school Seneca language students visited A.J. Schmidt, Highland, and J.T. Waugh Elementary Schools to teach younger students about the Seneca language, culture, and traditions, and to explain why we wear orange on this important day.
These student-led lessons encouraged empathy, connection, and pride in the region’s Haudenosaunee heritage. Across the district, staff and students wore orange to show solidarity and respect for Indigenous peoples.
