Lake Shore Innovators Shine at WNY Cardboard Arcade Challenge
Lake Shore High School students recently demonstrated their engineering prowess at the KeyBank Center in downtown Buffalo, participating in the annual WNY Cardboard Arcade Challenge. Led by Erie 1 BOCES, the January 30th showcase featured juniors Aubriann Safe and Tyler Spencer, supported by Technology Integrators Mrs. Poleon and Mr. Drezek, along with Kaiden Hamilton representing Lake Shore Scholastic Esports.
The event served as a culmination of work from the Media Technology Gaming Concepts class. Using the Games for Change Student Challenge framework, students moved beyond gameplay to design and engineer interactive experiences centered on critical global themes such as hunger, traffic safety, and environmental conservation.
Student Innovation on Display
Lake Shore was one of 13 Western New York school districts represented, a testament to the district’s active involvement in the Consortium for Student Empowerment through Innovation. The projects showcased a diverse range of technical platforms and social impact goals:
| Student | Game Title | Platform | Global Theme |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marty Wallace Jr. | Yield or Adrift | Minecraft Ed. | Outgrow Hunger |
| Wyatt Thompson | Rush | Delightex | Own the Road |
| Aubrianna Safe | Abode | Bloxels | All in for Nature |
| John Manning | Save the Jungle | Delightex | All in for Nature |
| Jason Fox | Safe Passage | Bloxels | Own the Road |
| Tyler Spencer | Harvest for Hope | Minecraft Ed. | Outgrow Hunger |
This project-based learning initiative allowed students to exercise critical thinking and technical literacy on a regional stage. The district is incredibly proud of the creativity and problem-solving skills these innovators displayed while representing Lake Shore.
