Pumpkin Thursday in the Science Lab

ANGOLA, NY – Halloween week in Intro to Biological Sciences meant one job on Thursday: open the pumpkin and find out what’s inside.
Students in Paul Schimert and Ken Kwilos’ class at Lake Shore High School worked from a “Dissect a Pumpkin” lab sheet. They measured the pumpkin first, then cut off the top, pulled out the pulp and seeds, and sketched each part as they went.

It’s a simple lab with a real point. Before students can study how living things are built, they practice looking closely, measuring carefully and writing down what they see. A pumpkin is a good place to start, and a fun one for the last week of October.
Thank you to Mr. Kwilos for sharing photos from class.
